Keep Your Minnows Alive
Use these 6 tips to keep your minnows alive much longer with very little effort and cost.
Hook More Fish - Using a needle nose pliers pinch a single or treble hook just below the barb. Then bend the hook out just a bit to open the gap.
Still Buying Ice? - 1 liter and 20 oz. plastic pop bottles are great for freezing water in. Just put the frozen water bottles in your cooler and your refreshments and sandwiches will stay nice an cold while saving you a little gas money.
Removing Line Twist - When your line becomes twisted feed out about the first 30 yards or so behind your boat at trolling speed or feed it down river. With your rod tip a few inches off the waters surface reel it in and watch the twists disappear.
Plastic Bait 2nd Life - By using a solder iron with adjustable tip temperature you can repair hook holes or even modify you plastic baits. Just the adjust the temperature so that it's just hot enough to re-melt the plastic.
Make Cork Handles Look New - Using light sand paper such as 120 grit you can make old cork on your fishing rod look new again.
Spinnerbait Mod - By adding a simple trailer hook to your spinnerbaits you can turn those missed short strikes into more hook sets.
Keep The Leftover Crawlers Alive - To keep your crawlers alive simply add some used coffee grounds for food and place them in your refrigerator. If married, be sure to place in the back!
No More Fish Smell - After cleaning a mess of fish or handling bait first wash your hands with soap and water. Next wash your hands again with some Listerine or tooth paste.
Catch Your Own Crawdads - Crawdads make excellent bait for both smallmouth and largemouth bass and can easily be caught by using bacon tied to the end of fishing line, no hook. Just lower the morsel into rock crevices and simply raise crawdads that clamp on to the bacon.
Better Tasting Fish - When filleting predator fish such as bass, northern pike, and walleyes be sure to remove the lateral line. Simply cut a V with your fillet knife from skin side of the fillet to remove it.
